Hazbin Hotel and the Nine Circles of Hell

From Dantes’s Inferno, we see the names of the Nine Circles of Hell:

Circle 1: Limbo

Circle 2: The Lustful

Circle 3: The Gluttony

Circle 4: Greed

Circle 5: Wrath

Circle 6: Heresy

Circle 7: Violence

Circle 8: Fraud

Circle 9: Treachery

Circle 1: Limbo

In Dante’s Inferno: Traditionally, this was where the unbaptized and pagans were sent. The sinful were punished “by living in a deficient form of Heaven.” There is a great castle surrounded by seven gates and a flowing brook. Philosophers such as Plato and Socrates and Aristotle were also found there.

Indeed, if the world of Hell in Hazbin Hotel is the First Circle, then it would explain several things. This Hell is closest to Heaven, as one can see it in a brief shot in the first episode. Hell is full of porn, turf wars, drug stores, and a variety of other places much like a regular city. It could be called a paradise for sinners, despite it still being Hell. Although the citizens in Hell committed all the greater sins, they still reside in the vast First Circle. Their punishment consists of the Archangels coming into Hell once every year to purge off much of the ever-growing population. Katie Killjoy means the Nine Circles of Hell, and as Hell is larger than both Heaven and Earth, it’d make sense there are other parts of it.

Here are several places in the Hazbin Hotel Hell including:

Cities and Kingdoms:
The official Pentagram City (red Pentagram hovering in the sky)
It is also the largest/main city. Both this area and all of Hell are ruled by fallen angel Lucifer and Lilith. Satan is Lucifer’s evil counterpart, who wears black versions of Lucifer’s outfit and has six bat wings. He resides in the Ninth Circle and sometimes can visit Lucifer and the other overlords. Pentagram City is closest to Heaven and Earth.

Stolas’ Kingdom
Ruled by Stolas, the pervert owl demon, his wife Melodia and daughter Octavia.

Levia City (the Leviathan Cross in teal in the sky, infinity symbol with two Ts on top)
Ruled by Leviathan, a humanoid bipedal green sea monster with a human-like face and body but with serpent fangs and green scaly skin. His palace is partly submerged underwater, surrounded by flames. He wears a suit with a bow-tie and earrings bearing his symbol. His wife and queen is fish/serpent like with dark hair and her name is Abyzou. They have a shy prince son named Franz. Levia is the birthplace of the Eldritch family, located near a flaming ocean filled with sea monsters that demons catch and consume. It consists of lots of stores for drugs and drinking.

Thelema City (Indigo upside down cross in the sky)
Ruled by Fly Lord Beezelbub, a man with fly wings, thin horns and several eyes that can see in any direction. Many of the demons who reside in this area of Hell possess wings. This city is heavily polluted from factories, which constantly emit oil and poisonous gases.

Circle 2: Lust
In Dante’s Inferno: The area were the lustful are sent, where they are blown about endlessly in a storm. Minos sentences tormentors to their fates.

This dimension of Hell in Hazbin world lays below the main area of Hell, below it are the other circles. The place consists of a dry windy desert, complete with violent daily storms. The sky is an ugly shade of tan. Above in the sky is a symbol of Venus in dull pink. The demons live in tunnels underground and sleep on bunk beds. Many of them watch porn in secret.

Circle 3: The Gluttony
In Dante’s Inferno: In this area, the gluttonous wallow in slush, filth, and icy rain. Cerebrus, the three-headed dog, guards them and sometimes attacks.

In the Hazbin world, the sky is eternally dark gray, with a blue symbol of a cornucopia with skulls inside. The demons here also live in a city, though it’s mostly slums and the streets often get flooded due to the rains.

Circle 4: Greed

In Dante’s Inferno: This area of Hell is guarded by Pluto/Hades, god of the underworld. Clergymen, misery and those hungry for wealth are forced to push boulders and bags of money up a steep hill.

In Hazbin world, the circle above dark green sky is neon green with a dollar sign. This area is where many gamblers reside. Turf wars rage throughout the city, demons fighting over land and property.

Circle 5: Wrath

In Dante’s Inferno: The wrathful fight each other in boats on the River Styx. The sullen and sulky ones lay helpless within the dark waters. The City of Dis is guarded by fallen angels and is one of the names of Pluto.

This area of Hazbin world resides in a dark cavern, filled with dark rivers and a city on the rocks. This is a major trade site and demons and sinners alike come down here to trade and exchange cultures…resulting in several fights.

Circle 6: Heresy

Dante’s Inferno: Souls in this area of Hell are trapped in flaming tombs for not worshipping God. Two legitimate sources of wealth are nature and art.

In the Hazbin World, the sky is black with a white neon skull in the sky. The demons here both celebrate and fear death. They often wear black and have glowing eyes which helps them see in the dark. They hardly ever sleep but once they do, the sometimes never wake up again. Hypnos is the King of this realm.

Circle 7: Violence

In Dante’s Inferno: The Seventh Circle is divided into three rings. There is an area affected by an earthquake along with a minotaur. In the first ring, the war makers are plunged into a river of boiling blood and fire. Centaurs shoot the sinners with arrows whenever they try to escape. In the second ring, the Wood of the Suicides, sinners are turned into thorny trees which are fed upon by Harpies. In the third ring, is a Plain of Burning Sand, where flames fall down from the sky like fiery rain. Sinners are stretched upon the sand, some run in circles, and some crouch and weep. Geryon, the monster of Fraud is a creature with a man’s head and a dragon’s body.

In Hazbin World, a red circle with a sword is shown in the sky. Here is where many weapons are bought and sold. Vampires and demons and Hellhounds drink the blood from the river as it cools in other parts.

Circle 8: Fraud

In Dante’s Inferno: Here is the Malebolge (Evil Ditches). There are ten narrow ditches. Panders and seducers are marched in rows and whipped by horned demons. Flatterers are steeped in excrement. Those who committed sale of favors are placed head first in round tube holes, flames burning their feet. The sorcerers have to walk with their heads backwards from their bodies. Corrupt politicians are stuck in pitch and tar, guarded by flying demons. Hypocrites walk around a narrow path for eternity, weighted down by robes. Thieves are tortured by serpents. Sowers of Discord are chased and mutilated by a demon wielding a bloody sword. Falsifiers are afflicted with terrible diseases. The Central wall is guarded by giants.

In Hazbin World, this is a mining area. Demons mine for gems, gold, oil, and other substances…even those from other worlds. Their city resides both on top of and inside canyons.

Circle 9: Treachery

In Dante’s Inferno: In this circle, sinners are trapped in ice. Satan is frozen to a lake. Satan has three faces, yellow, red and black and gnaws on traitors: Brutus, Longinus, and Iscariot, the apostle who betrayed Jesus Christ.

In Hazbin World, this area is closest to the Void, once anyone gets too close to the hole, they fall in and die a second permanent death. As such, there are not many residents in this frozen world. Inside the lake lie parasitic demons trapped in the lake…waiting to burst free and infect all demons. Satan, Lucifer’s darker counterpart, dwells here sometimes.
