The Great Race of Life

Long ago, Man, Beast, Flora, Bird, Fish, and Bacteria were good friends. They sat on a red tiled roof, overlooking the vast landscape. One day, Goddess Earth, Grand Universe, and the Gods announced a race that would change their lives. Father Sun, Mother Moon, and the Ocean Emperor would also be there to watch and judge. The six friends accepted and got ready. The race began and soon, they were off. They came across an impenetrable mountain, too high and steep for them to climb. The only way past was a large hole underground in front of them. Together, they jumped down the gaping hole and swam through the groundwater below.
The deities watched to see who would come up first to the surface of Time. Bacteria arrived first and kept evolving as they ran. Fish and Flora rose around the same time and continued onward. Bird arrived and Beast made it shortly afterward. It was several cosmic moments before Man finally emerged. As the race continued on, Father Sun noticed Flora had great endurance over most of the other racers. However, even Flora was getting tired fast. Her leaves were turning wrinkled and brown, and she soon felt hundreds of years old. A concerned Sun looked at Flora and then had an idea. Sun bathed Flora in his rays, giving her newfound strength, bright colors and better growth than ever before. Soon, Flora had converted Sun’s energy into her own. Flora saw her friends falling behind. “This isn’t fair,” she said to herself. “I don’t want them to exhaust themselves like that.” To give her friends strength and endurance, she spread leftover oxygen to each of them. Soon the race was even once again.
The racers kept going until reaching a fork in the road. One path was a thin river hidden by the shade. The central path was covered with grass and rocks. The third path led to an erupting volcano nearby. The friends had to act fast.
Bacteria couldn’t decide which path to take. Then Bacteria thought, “Why not take all three?”
Bacteria split up into several forms and zoomed down all three paths. Not hesitating, Beast, Flora, and Man ran straight ahead. Fish was about to follow them, when he noticed the hidden river to the left.
“I’ll take the less beaten track,” he stated.
Fish jumped into the river and swam down it with all his might. Feeling content in his new environment, he decided to stay underwater forever.
“I don’t need to keep running after them,” Bird then thought. “I’ll just fly instead!”
Bird grew a pair of wings and took off. He enjoyed the new feeling of freedom. He looked down at his racers who were now just below him. Beast looked up in shock and yelled insults at Bird, angry that he would cheat and skip over the land. “I can’t hear you from up here!” Bird cawed. Bird flew ahead and left his friends behind.
Goddess Earth became concerned that Bacteria would keep splitting across the land without any purpose. With a snap of her fingers, Bacteria transformed into two mighty brothers. The younger brother was highly curious about the world around him. He wanted to merge not only with the land, but with the organisms inhabiting it. He then split himself into dozens of places, merging with a host of living things. It wasn’t long before he merged with Fish, Flora, Beast, Bird, and Man. Sensing good curiosity in him, his friends allowed him to merge and protect them. Bacteria would help fight off foreign invaders, while his friends would provide him with energy from food. However, the older Bacteria brother was the opposite. He expressed disgust at any organism that was different from himself. Instead of being curious and harmonious, he wanted their energy for himself. To him, other life forms were inferior edible objects. Getting excited and battle-hungry, he entered his competitors in addition to other living beings, attempting to make them ill and steal their life forces. To this day, the brothers are locked in an endless battle over the possession of life.
It wasn’t long before the finish line was approaching. Once the racers made it past, their fates would be sealed by the higher powers.
“Beast!” Man cried. “I can’t keep up with you on these two legs. Provide me with some support.”
“I don’t think so,” Beast replied. “I am going to win this race to prove that I am the highest animal.”
Fish and Bird were already ahead of everyone else.
“Please, Beast,” pleaded Man.
Beast sighed and said “Very well.”
Beast glowed in a white light and bright circles flew from him and landed beside Man. The circles morphed into dogs, cats, birds, and all forms of pets.  The pets were loving and encouraging toward Man, even helping him hunt and spy on the rest of the racers.
Sensing distrust, the Beast snarled. “You dare use my kind to do your bidding? That’s very sly of you, to use your new ‘pets’ to try and defeat us!” Beast dodged an attack from one of the man’s hunting dogs. Beast looked at his former friend one last time. “It is done. You’re on your own from now on.”
Filled with a new hunger for power and knowledge, Man formed a variety of tools from his brain; spears, wheels, metal, and eventually, electricity. The more he used his magic, the faster Man seemed to create. Earth Goddess begged him to stop, but Man would not listen.  The Ocean Emperor became concerned for Man as well. While Fish became a part of him, the other racers would be welcome to visit and take brief breaks. Man, however, was a rather rude guest. He stole the fish, extracted resources from the ocean floor and vowed to learn all of the Emperor’s secrets. On land, Man carved deep trenches into the Earth Goddess’ skin, cut down trees, and was soon ahead of all the other racers. “Try and beat my divine intelligence!” he called back to them.
Flora soon burst into rainy tears. “Oh Man,” she sobbed. “Why are you doing this? Are we still friends? I thought we were supposed to race together.” Indeed, Earth Goddess herself was disappointed at the unfair sportsmanship.
Finally, the six racers made it past the finish line. “It is done,” said the Gods. “Based on the results, you all will go your separate ways, yet be able to be in contact with each other.”
“Fish, Flora, Bird, and Beast,” announced Sun and Moon. “You all have passed this ultimate test. For that, you may pass and live your lives as you see fit.”
Then Grand Universe, the leader of them all, said a final message to the racers. “Before you go, listen carefully. Your race has only begun. Though you may have passed the finish line here, there is no ending out there. I warn you that all of you will eventually get tired and not be able to race anymore. I am sure many of you have already noticed that fact. Therefore, you must be able to create others like yourselves who will take your place. Likewise, they will need to rely on other living things to continue the race. The cycles of creation and destruction for you have now begun.” The stars in the universe then burst into fiery dust and entered into the six racers. They were granted the ability to reproduce and pass down their knowledge to future generations. Fish, Beast, Flora, and Bird bowed respectfully and disappeared into the void ahead.
“Bacteria,” said Earth Goddess. “I have given you the duty to support all other life forms in this world. Alas, I have made the mistake of forming your older brother. Allow me to vanquish him where he…” Before she could finish, the older Bacteria brother had already moved ahead. The younger Bacteria brother chased after him.
“Man,” said the Gods, before he could move through the gate. Man looked up at the deities before him. “Once you move past this boundary, you will have two choices. You can either restart the race to make amends with your friends and the land.” Man looked behind him and saw a hill of sludge hovering over the village that he and his friends were in before the race. “Or,” Earth Goddess added, “You can continue your pursuit of power and knowledge, unaware of the consequences until it is too late. Man then saw a vision of him and his companions on the roof being devoured by the flooding sludge, the sludge that he had caused during the race. “You and your friends will reunite with me soon,” said Grand Universe as a last farewell. Without looking back, Man continued on his way.

Valuable list of Native American beliefs

Doing something different this time. Here, I list some common philosophical beliefs of many Native Americans and how they perceive the world. The list is from the book "How it is: the Native American philosophy of V.F. Cordova." edited by Kathleen Dean Moore, Kurt Peters, Ted Jojola, and Amber Lucy.

In contrast to Western views, Native Americans believe that the universe is infinite and that we all come from one particular force. They perceive the Earth as a living organism, in which humans are dependent upon. For them, the past and the future are social constructs since the present is shaping the future and is, in turn supported by the past. Motion is equal to life.

1.      “Human beings are a part of a whole that is greater than the individual. A human is not something apart from the Earth and the rest of its creations, including rocks, trees, water, and air; he is a natural part of the Earth” (Moore et al. p.151).

2.      “A human is first and foremost a ‘herd being.’ He is such even more so than other beings by virtue of the bonding “mechanism” of a common language that allows for shared traditions, rituals, and histories. No other life forms have an equally strong bonding mechanism. The individual has value because of his uniqueness…and because of the potential gifts he brings to the group. But the group is preeminent. The sense of “we” dominates the sense of “I.” (Moore et al. p 151).

3.      Human beings are not alone in having “intelligence”-all life forms are understood to have intelligence in one form or another. However, humans differ from other life forms in that they have a greater capacity for memory. This larger memory capacity allows humans to understand the consequences of their actions. Wisdom, or intelligence, consists of being able to see how our actions and their consequences affect the greater whole, not just the group but also the world around them.” (Moore et al. p. 151).

4.      “Human beings, unlike, say, bears, have the capacity to change their behavior. They do not, in other words, act only from instinct.” (Moore et al. p. 151).

5.      “Humans are not “fallen” creatures; they are what the Earth intended. Most of all, they “fit” in this world because they are products of it. A sense of alienation from the world and its many beings would not, in this context, be seen as the common malady of individuals but as a psychotic disruption, an illness” (Moore et al. 151).

6.      “A human is both spirit and nonspirit, mind and body, matter and energy at the same time and requires both to exist in unison in order to be” (Moore et al. 151-152).

7.      “Humans are not superior to other life forms. They are simply different. The difference is natural in a world that displays a vast variety of diverse life forms. Humans are one among many others, and all are “equal” in the sense that they all depend on some very specific conditions of the planet Earth in order to survive. All of the diversity, together, forms a complete whole that is what the Earth is. …Moreover, no group of humans is “superior” to another. They are produced to fill a certain ecological niche and are therefore each different.” (Moore et al. p. 152).

8.      “Humans are an integral part of the whole.”

9.      “Humans are born “humanoid,” that is with the capacity to become “fully human” through the exercise of all of their faculties.” (Moore et al. p. 152).

10.  “Humans, as part of a greater whole, become part of an ever-changing and ongoing process that is the Universe in process of being. We have the capacity to change the course of that whole-for good or evil-through our actions.” (Moore et al. p. 153).

The Tuffle and the Saiyan faced each other as a flash of lightning lit up the stormy gray sky on Earth. Form an outsider’s view, they looked like two ordinary men. The Tuffle, Enoki, was the shorter one, with white skin, short black hair, golden-yellow eyes, and a scared face. Enoki wore his typical yellow jacket, dark colored shirt, red belt, blue pants, and dark red boots. Enoki adjusted the red scouter over his left eye.

“So I heard that you managed to arrive to this planet,” the Tuffle stated. He gave the Saiyan a look of curiosity tinged with disgust.  “What led you to abandon your life on Planet Plant?” Then he added in a condescending manner, “One planet not enough to satisfy your greed?”

“The name is Planet Vegeta,” scowled the larger warrior in a low voice. “At least, it was called that.” His irises and long spiky hair were the color of black holes and he wore a black battle gi, shirt, pants and boots to match. A thin chain necklace with a Christian cross hung fairly loose around his neck. Enoki suspected that the Saiyan had a brown tail like the other Saiyans, but he wasn’t sure if he was missing his tail or if it was hidden.

The Saiyan spoke again. “You know nothing about what happened to our race.  My people were nearly wiped out by Frieza when he blew up Planet Vegeta. He enslaved the Saiyans, worse than your people did, sending them on dangerous missions to conquer planets for him! King Vegeta’s arrogance didn’t help the situation, either. I’m surprised that you weren’t wiped out like the rest of them during that fateful night of the full moon.”

After his rant, he observed Enoki closely. There was something different about him that he was trying to comprehend. “Are you sure you’re really a Tuffle? I sense a mixed energy from you.”

Enoki crossed his arms. “Of course I am. I am Enoki, the Tuffle through and through. If it weren’t for you Saiyans committing near genocide on my race, then I would be living a much better life right now!”
The Saiyan scoffed. “So…Enoki, can you explain how your ancestors enslaving my people was any better than what we Saiyans did to your kind?”

“We didn’t enslave you!” Enoki argued. “My ancestors welcomed you with open arms. If you Saiyans had managed to control yourselves, we wouldn’t have had to banish you. Who are you, anyway?”

“I call myself Enigma,” he answered. “And if you had treated my race with respect and shared your land and valuables with us, then we wouldn’t have fought you in the first place.”

Enoki let out a shaky laugh. “Oh please! ‘You wouldn’t have fought us?’ That’s like saying fish wouldn’t have to live underwater. Your people were after the entire planet, not just our wealth and weapons. All you care about is yourselves and any fight that comes your way. I might add, you all are gluttonous too.”

“We are not!” Enigma protested. “We just need to eat a lot of food to survive. What’s your purpose behind living in metal boxes and playing with tools all day long? You wouldn’t know a battle nor the outside world if it was right in front of your eyes.”

“It’s called being educated,” Enoki stated.

“More like being restrained,” Enigma scoffed. “I am plenty smart enough to survive on my own. You wouldn’t last a day without your precious technology.”

“You and your primitive mind wouldn’t last long either,” Enoki mentioned.

“What did you just say?” Enigma asked darkly.

“You heard me, or are you deaf as well as a brute?”

Enigma yelled in response and his spiky hair turned the golden color of a Super Saiyan.
“Now you’re just asking to die, Tuffle.”

Enoki powered up as well, and his hair turned crimson red.
“What form is that?” Enigma asked.

“Super Tuffle,” he replied.

“I thought Tuffles couldn’t naturally power up like Saiyans.”

“Well now you know,” Enoki responded.

“So that means…you’re not a whole Tuffle! You’re just a puny hybrid!” He let out a malevolent cackle.

“You take that back, you dark emo ape!” Enoki spat.

Anger flamed in his eyes along with a crazed grin appeared on Enigma’s face. “The only one I’ll take back is a red-haired Tuffle…back to his long-gone family!”

Faster than Enoki could blink, Enigma fired a black beam of energy at Enoki’s chest. The impact hit him hard and he fell backwards to the ground.
Enoki lifted himself up, using his hands and knees, barely dodging the array of circular blasts that Enigma fired from his fingers. Enoki dodged the blasts as he sprinted to the right. He flew in the air over the rest of the blasts, aiming his fist at Enigma’s face. He caught the Tuffle’s fist in his right hand, stopping Enoki’s decent. Enigma fired up a teal blast with his other hand, but Enoki jabbed him in the neck with his elbow and jumped out of the way. The blast had hit the ground, sending dirt and sparks into Enigma’s face. Now it was the Tuffle’s turn to laugh evilly.

The Saiyan wiped his face and shook his head. Seizing the opportunity, Enoki kicked him from behind, after teleporting behind him. The Saiyan stumbled forward, but didn’t fall. He whirled around and punched at the Tuffle with both hands. The Tuffle easily blocked and dodged the attacks.

For several minutes, both men were hovering in the air, throwing kicks and punches, dodging each one. Finally, the Tuffle got the upper hand and smacked the Saiyan several time across the face. Enigma stopped him with a tight grip of his wrist. Enoki grimaced in pain as he felt his wrist being squeezed harder. Enoki knew that he would be fighting with one hand if he didn’t escape.

“You think this hurts?” Enigma asked with a smirk. “How about I try your neck next?”

His large white hand reached out as the Tuffle still struggled. Enoki leaned backward and turned himself almost upside down. Through the pain, he fired blindly at the Saiyan with his left hand.

“What the?” Enigma asked.

Enigma blocked the attack, but his temporary surprise allowed Enoki to break free from the Saiyan’s grip.

Soon the metallic, stormy air was quiet again, save for the two men catching their breaths and a distant rumble of thunder. Enoki was thankful to have his round Portabello spaceship nearby, (with transparent mode on of course, so it could not be seen by anyone, except his droids.) The dark gray clouds above helped illuminate the already bright auras of the warriors. Down below, the green grass swayed in the breeze, the many green blades reaching toward the sky as the first drops of rain started to fall. Out toward the horizon, tall leafy palm trees danced in the wind, moving from side to side.

For a moment, the warriors were silent. They pierced each other with harsh glares and clenched fists.

Then, as if they read each other’s minds, Enoki and Enigma powered up at the same moment, their yells echoing through the air.

Their hair gradually grew longer as they ascended to their higher forms. Enigma’s hair grew longer down his back as he transformed into Super Saiyan 3. Enoki’s red hair got spikier and spread out from his head in a star-like shape as he entered Super Tuffle 3. Enigma’s dark teal aura contrasted with Enoki’s red aura.

“You are making a huge mistake, messing with me,” Enigma stated.

“After having my race wiped out and barely surviving the impact, I think fighting you should be a piece of cake,” Enoki retorted.

“Very well, Tuffle. Your second final death awaits you.”

At the same time, they fired their ultimate powers at each other.

“Sonic Beam Blast!” cried Enoki.

A beam of dark red light shot from his finger in circular waves.

“Black Star Death Ball!” yelled Enigma.

A black sphere of energy formed in his upheld right hand and he thrust it forward.

The energy beams clashed with a trembling force and a brief flash of white light. The two warriors struggled against each other’s power. The beams moved back and forth, as Enoki and Enigma kept pushing them back. Enoki yelled once more and his hair turned a vivid purple.

“Super Tuffle ascended 4!” he yelled to no one in particular.
Enigma let out a scream of his own as his long golden hair slowly grew longer into Super Saiyan 3 form. His teal eyes stared from under where his eyebrows used to be.

“I was never a fan of that form,” he muttered.

Gradually, Enigma’s black ball of energy inched closer to Enoki. He squinted his face in concentration, trying to push it back. The more he pushed it back, the closer it seemed to get afterward. He yelled and powered up farther but nothing seemed to do any good.

“Sonic Beam Blast times 10!” he yelled. His aura turned a vivid red and the black sphere was being pushed back…right toward the center. Enigma stayed in the same position.

“Come on, come on,” he muttered. The red beam slowly pushed Enigma’s energy back at him…much too slowly.

Sweat formed on Enoki’s forehead and his arms started to shake. His breaths came in fast huffs.

He looked at Enigma and wondered why he was causally standing there. His thoughts were soon interrupted. An abrupt force spread from behind him in light blue waves, nearly knocking him off balance. He turned his head and spotted an android with long blue hair, white skin and striking eyes. She was standing with Shiktake, Enoki’s droid. Enoki had never seen her before, but was glad that he found some individuals to help him.

The android went up to stand not too far away from Enoki. “Sorry about that,” she said in a mechanical eloquent voice. “I didn’t know you two were fighting and I was just practicing using my powers.”

“That’s… alright” said Enoki. “Just…help me out…please…” Enoki needed all the help he could get from the android allies.

“Of course,” she said. She powered up a light blue disc in her hand and threw it off into the distance. Enoki concentrated on the fight before him. His beam of red light was now starting to push Enigma’s attack back. Enoki breathed a sigh of relief.

Out of the corner of his eye, Enoki saw the android’s blue disc shaped power come flying back…right toward him! It hit the ground and the Tuffle stumbled backward.

Seizing his chance, Enigma shot his dark energy blast right into Enoki. He yelled and twitched in surprise as the dark force consumed him. Enoki soon felt his body powering down and spots appearing before his eyes. His hair turned back to red and he slumped face first onto the ground.

“Well done, Dysphobia-san,” he grinned.

She grinned back. “My pleasure, Enigma-san. We won’t have to worry about rivals coming to Earth much longer.”
She wore black jeans, a dark blue gi and dark boots. The upper left side of her face was transparent with soft blue light, the electricity flowing vein like.
“If we have children in the future, then they will grow up to be strong warriors for sure” said Enigma.

“And great gamers,” added Dysphobia. “Though not as good as me…I mean us,” she corrected after a glare from her partner.

“Let’s hurry and finish off the Tuffle,” Enigma reminded her.

They marched over to the fallen warrior and raised their hands over him. Out of nowhere, a Saiyan with blue spiky hair appeared in front of them. He yelled and sent both of them back with a blue blast from his hands. A curved M was positioned in the center of his forehead. Two more Saiyans appeared nearby via instant transmission.

“MajinBlue!” called a Saiyan with long red hair and a Greek accent. “Take care of Enoki! I’ll handle this.”

Faster than light, Dysphobia rushed over and blasted the Saiyan into the air with a mighty punch.
“Orack!” MajinBlue called in concern.

“I’m okay!” he yelled in the distance.

MajinBlue rounded on Enigma and the warriors traded blows in the air. “Man you are strong!” MajinBlue exclaimed.

Orack rushed over toward Enigma at the same time as MajinBlue, but Enigma blocked both of their hits.

Another Saiyan, Retro Ranter, had long brown hair and wore dark green Saiyan armor. He pulled out a senzu bean from his pocket and leaned down toward Enoki. He gently turned him over so his face was pointing toward the sky. A blast from Dysphobia knocked him backward.
“Darn it!” he cursed. Retro rushed forward and elbowed her in the chest. He then winced and rubbed his elbow from the impact. He threw more punches, which Dysphobia dodged effortlessly. Shitake, gently picked Enoki up and searched for the senzu bean. He found it on the ground and picked it up.
“Five second rule need not apply,” he spoke in a robotic voice. He put the bean in Enoki’s mouth and helped him swallow it. After a few minutes, the Tuffle stirred and groaned.
“Shitake?” he asked the tan droid.

“Enoki-sama, you’re awake.”

“Yeah. You saved my life again.”

Shitake thrust out his metallic hand, forming a green energy shield that blocked another teal blast from Dysphobia.

“We must flee,” stated Shitake.
“I can’t leave my allies behind,” said Enoki, straightening himself up. “No matter how crazy they may be.”

“I can’t lose you again Enoki-sama. It’s too risky.”

“Being a Saiyan involves taking risks,” said Enoki in a much clearer voice. “Guard the ship and get ready to take off.”

“But Enoki…”

Enoki freed himself from the droid and charged at Enigma with a renewed vigor. Even with three Saiyans fighting Enigma at once, he was still able to dodge most of their attacks. Dysphobia was firing at the empty space, until a smoking hole from her blast revealed the ship’s location. Shitake stood his ground and fired green blasts of his own. Retro Ranter stood and observed the area, making sure that no one else had arrived on the scene.

Enigma spread out his hands and another dark sphere of energy expanded from in between them. The Saiyans flew away in different directions only to be pushed back by another shock wave from Dsyphobia.

“You have three choices, Saiyans,” said Enigma. “Join me and help me defeat those who have wronged me and my race.”

“We will gladly fight the Frieza force with you,” said Retro Ranter, playing it safe.

“You will not fight my demon brethren,” scowled MajinBlue. “They still raised me in the past.”

“The Majins have caused enough trouble as it is,” said Enigma in contempt. “They will stay in Hell where they belong.”

“I will not submit myself to someone else’s Tuffle-hating leadership,” added Enoki. “Although you are the strongest warrior I have faced thus far.”

“I don’t need to tell you how ignorant and stupid you are,” said Enigma. Then he smirked, “Oh I just did.”

“For His Majesty King Vegeta!” yelled Orack out of nowhere.

“King Vegeta was a tyrant who only cared for himself and his elite supporters,” said Enigma. “He never once thought to consider his own common people, let alone the other races he and his army destroyed.”
“You are fools to support the enemies,” said Enigma. “Stand and face me, or else I’ll redirect my blast to your ship and your friends.”

He raised the dark energy sphere high above his head, the blast growing slowly each minute.

Retro Ranter in a state of panic, teleported himself to his Saiyan comrades. The four men looked at each other and nodded.

They thrust out their hands together and sent several beams of red, yellow, blue, and green at Enigma.

“Sonic Beam Blast!” said Enoki.

“Retro Rager!” yelled Retro.

“Fractal Flash!” shouted Orack.

“Demonic Destruction!” said MajinBlue.

Once again, the energies clashed in the center. Enoki looked up and saw his ship, now fully revealed, flying through the air controlled by Shitake. Dysphobia raced after it, shooting blasts from her hands.

They were even in the fight for a while. Then Enigma’s dark blast inched forward toward the warriors.

“Not again!” groaned Enoki.

“Everyone let go!” ordered Retro Ranter suddenly.

“Are you insane?” yelled Orack. “Keep pushing!”

“We won’t last much longer,” said MajinBlue.

Enoki looked and saw the ship hovering below them, a hatch on the top of the ship wide open.
“Listen to Retro! Do it!” cried Enoki. Enigma’s energy was almost in front of their faces now.

“Now!” Enoki called.

Together, the four men gave one final push at the black energy and let themselves fall from their backs. They froze in midair just before hitting the metallic ground from inside the spaceship.

Shitake removed his finger from an orange button on the wall that controlled the gravity around the area.

“Get us out of here!” said Retro.

The hatch door closed just before Dysphobia blasted a large hole through it. With a single command from Shitake, the ship lurched forward and picked up speed. After several more direct hits, Enigma and Dsyphobia faded to dark dots in the distance, unable to catch up.

“This battle is not over,” said Enigma, Dsyphobia standing next to him.

Part 2

After Enoki and the Saiyans made their escape, Enigma finds them again. Halusa and MajinBlue fuse (Majinblusa) and Retro Ranter and Orack fuse (Retrorack). But Enigma has unlocked a new form beyond god level: Super Saiyan Black. Who will win? Next time on DragonRealm Meloverse!
