Analysis of "When Heaven Calls" by Matt Fraser

Analysis of “When Heaven Calls” (2020) by Matt Fraser

Rating: five out of five

Naturally, after reading “Secrets to Unlock Your Psychic Ability,” I moved onto his second book, “When Heaven Calls.” Against a background of heavenly clouds, a multitasking Matt answers several phone calls like a busy guy doing customer service. He is comedically wrapped in phone wires on the back of the book. The golden angel wings on his jacket accentuates the multitude of heavenly themes surrounding Matt. Ordinarily, one would assume he was just a dapperly dressed guy calling his friends.

But him receiving “phone calls” from another dimension changes the concept completely.

After looking at the cover, I imagined a cartoon Matt sitting at his desk with a #1 Dad mug beside him, holding a phone with a glowing wire. The wire leads to a family member’s spirit in the air, dressed as an angel, playing in a meadow of energy. A third phone line leads to a living client of Matt’s, anxious to hear that their loved one is alright. The “Holy Trinity” of communicators were in the progress of a healing that many grief counseling therapists would envy. “Ring, ring! Heaven is Calling!” appears as the slogan. ‘This would look good on a t-shirt,’ I thought. I guess Matt does have friends on the Other Side! (Sorry, I had to!)

Back to the book. In “When Heaven Calls,” Matt describes what an average day as a famous psychic medium is like. Life would be unusually unique if one could see the souls of loved ones beside the living, desperate to communicate to their families. Matt explains that he gets visions and pictures in his mind’s eye (clairvoyance) from the souls communicating with him. At a rapid pace, he can interpret the symbols he sees and relay it to the living person as efficient as any everyday conversation. He also hears voices (clairaudience) from them and feels bodily sensations (clairsentience) that give clues as to how the person had passed away. Everywhere Matt goes, the dead follow.

Despite Matt at his core being an Ascended Master/ divine messenger for humanity, he says he’s also just an ordinary guy who loves doughnuts, hazelnut coffee, cookie dough cheesecake, his family, and helping other people. He’s just like everyone else…but with a special gift granted at birth.

Summary:

Chapter One: “Heaven Calls!”

In a good-hearted narrative, Matt describes his typical day of dragging himself out of bed to get ready for the day. With TV show appearances and readings in many states, Matt is a busy man. Plus, Matt and Alexa will have a new baby boy, Royce! To top it all for the young medium, spirits know that Matt can sense then, so they appear to him in any way they can. Matt mentions that he can read people anywhere, whether they are in person, online or on the phone. The spirit world has no boundaries. Matt can feel spirits before the readings even begin. He also explains that some souls stay longer in the spirit world to complete their life reviews and allow the client to heal over time. According to Matt, souls feel regret when they commit suicide.

Matt mentions an important point: spirits are there to help you improve and live your life, but they are not there to make decisions for you. We all have free will and our lost loved ones want us to live the best lives we can. But of course, grief makes things harder. A good balance is needed between being involved with the physical world and the spiritual world. Getting psychic readings every day and overthinking things would not be recommended. Even the people who do not get a reading get something valuable: a sense that we are all connected, living and dead.

Chapter Two: “Matt’s Early Years. Doesn’t Everyone See Ghosts?”

If everyone could see ghosts, death and discrimination would not be big problems. People would learn that the spirit world and its energy inhabitants are nothing to fear. In addition, our physical society would expand as we would all learn valuable lessons from those in spirit. Sadly, this is not the case, and the gift of seeing the dead is rare.

Back when Matt was a little boy, he thought he was being haunted when he could see and hear spirits. He tried to push them back, but the messages kept coming. Fortunately, his psychic grandmother Mary comforted the young Matt and helped him make sense of his ability. When Mary passed, both he and Matt’s psychic mother Angela missed her. But Mary communicated to Matt in spirit, telling him to encourage his grieving mother to live her life to the fullest. Angela accepted the message and the family’s bond grew stronger.

Naturally the majority of people do not have the experience of speaking to spirits. Matt had a hard time fitting in at school. Many people and psychologists assumed that Matt was making up his stories, but his psychic mother knew what was really going on. As Matt got older, Matt briefly forgot about seeing the departed and lived a ‘normal’ life. He moved onto his EMT career because he had a natural desire to help and heal others. Then he rediscovered his abilities after a psychic proclaimed he had a great destiny as a medium.

Matt encourages parents to listen to their psychic kids; to be good role models like his mother. Some children are shyer than others, Asking the right questions and showing to the child that you’re listening, is very helpful. Babies, children, and pets have a greater connection to spirit, but Matt says potentially, we all can rediscover hidden abilities. The New Age concepts of “Indigo”, “Crystal” and “Rainbow” children are brought up; labeling children with certain traits/disabilities. (I was also one of them when I was younger, but I cannot be defined by any labels.) Although many children are emotional, intuitive, creative, and not confined by authority, only certain ones are psychic or have certain disabilities. It’s important to not see them as “superior” or “evolved” like many New Age philosophies portray. It dehumanizes them. Acknowledge they are like everyone else, only with additional traits and accommodations.)

Chapter Three: “High School Hell”

Here, Matt describes his teenage years in high school where he was frequently bullied. The other kids were jocks and athletes while Matt preferred fashion and reading. Fortunately, Matt later transferred to a public school where he fit in better. Matt soon graduated from school.

Regarding career, Matt first wanted to be a therapist, given his natural empathy. Then he decided he wanted to be an EMT in the medical field to heal people. Wondering what career to pursue and whether a girl liked him, Matt decided to visit a local tearoom psychic.

Little did he know that the reading would change his entire life.

Right away, the psychic told Matt that his grandmother Mary was coming through. Despite Matt pushing his abilities away, Mary sent the message that he needed to embrace his ability instead. The psychic didn’t talk about Matt’s career or the girl; she told Matt that being a psychic medium was his destiny. Matt was in shock but decided to meditate at home like he was instructed. A flood of information rushed back to him, and his abilities came back.

When Matt first started readings, he did them for his teenage friends at parties for fun. Gradually, Matt grew more serious and empathic as he started to read for adult clients. Matt had become both a psychic medium and a grief counselor. The messages came from everywhere as Matt healed dozens of people. He soon discovered that to our souls, human lifetimes are like seconds compared to the timelessness of the afterlife. Matt reminds us that whenever you feel like you don’t fit in, embrace who you really are inside; embrace the talents you have to offer the world.

Chapter Four: “Helping And Healing”

Strangely enough, Matt was one of few people not afraid of death, one of few lucky enough to have an unusually strong connection to the spirit world. Matt was very busy as an EMT, doing night shifts and assessing people’s health conditions. Yet he also built his psychic business and wrote his first book. He soon found himself doing busier day shifts. Although Matt considered being a paramedic, he decided to give mediumship a try. It was hard for him to leave EMT, but his colleagues supported him on his journey.

It wasn’t long before Matt’s fame and talent grew. He started to appear on TV and radio. Matt’s psychic mother did readings of her own as well and the two family members made a great team. Matt sees visions of names, dates, and specific information from the spirits that only the client would know.  Matt learned that relationships are meant to be enjoyed, not rushed and that healing comes from within.

Chapter Five: “You’re A Wizard, Harry!” “You’re A Medium, Matt!” “I’m A What?”

Matt received a gift of playing cards from his grandmother that she had used in her readings. It was an incredible moment for Matt when he not only rediscovered his abilities but began to embrace them. Back when his grandmother was alive, psychic gifts were kept secret from society. She would only share information with nonjudgmental family and friends. Some people questioned Matt’s ability due to his young age, but Matt persevered.

Now if only there was a real-life Hogwarts school for potential psychics and mediums around in the U.S.

Chapter Six: “Breaking the News to Dad”

Matt’s father was more skeptical of Matt’s ability. He grew up in a strict Catholic household. Matt’s parents met at a nightclub and soon got together. After Matt’s grandma died, Matt’s dad didn’t want anything to do with cards or magic. Matt’s sister Maria was a skeptic as well. Eventually, Matt broke the news that he was a medium. Over time, his dad became more accepting of his families’ abilities.

Chapter Seven: “Skeptics, Nonbelievers, and Negative Nancys”

In this chapter, Matt explains the times when he convinces some skeptical people that their departed loved ones still exist. At a Boston show, there were “shock jocks” tried to mock and discredit him. But after several readings, they paused and realized their mistake. Matt reached a new skeptical audience and was changing their ways of thinking.

Matt mentions that many people are resistant and skeptical to readings out of fear or only wanting to hear certain messages from certain loved ones. Many times, they don’t want to hear that a loved passed from suicide or overdose or other tragic ways. Connections with spirit go beyond labels of mother, father, husband, wife, etc. Some messages are more detailed than others; vague readings are often called cold readings where they could apply to anyone.

Matt encourages people to keep an open positive mind. Let the medium deliver the message and don’t let bias get in the way. Trust that the universe will give you messages when the time is right.

Chapter Eight: “Ouija Boards, Psychic Protection, Positivity And Hope”

Matt’s mother says, “The dead can’t hurt you, it’s the living people you need to be afraid of.” Ouija boards can open portals to let evil spirits in when not used properly. Don’t mess around with spells or go to haunted places. Matt claims that many spirits are not evil but to be careful regardless. Evil spirits mess around with the living and like to be by themselves. But hopefully there are spirit guides, loved ones and angels around to protect the living. There is good and bad energy everywhere but making your living space light and positive will help keep good energy in.

Chapter Nine: “The Game of Telephone”

Matt reminds people that not everyone will get a reading and that not all souls come through. The person may not be ready to hear a message yet. Matt explains that messages come through fast with symbols and images flashing in his mind’s eye along with voices and physical sensations. Spirits tell meaningful information they feel the person needs to know. Don’t become addicted to psychics; you need a good balance between being spiritual and living your everyday life. Spirits also want you to learn and grow on your own!

Have an open mind, don’t try to control things, and stay positive. You never know who will come through. Surrendering, letting go and embracing the unknown is hard for every human.

Chapter Ten: “Soul Mates”

Soul mates are not just romantic. We only perceive it to be so because we prioritize romantic relationships over others in western society. Soulmates has the word ‘mates’ in it, meaning ‘friends.’ In essence, it is a person or several people you feel a mutual bond with. It could be a lover, spouse, child, friend, sibling, parent, or even a pet. Matt assures us that we will reconnect with our soulmate in the afterlife. Matt and Alexa may be wealthy, but they love watching TV and eating and spending time with family like all of us.

Love is what matters most in the end. There are many kinds of love, and all contribute to your fulfilment.

Chapter Eleven: “Heaven, Transitions, And The Afterlife”

Matt assures us that there will be loved ones and spirit guides who will help us to heaven when we die and transition. Some people see family members when they are dying. Heaven/spirit world is a timeless energy realm that is different for each soul. It manifests as a place where we create our own versions of paradise, much like a dream. Matt claims that death is nothing to fear, it is a transition to another realm where we remain connected to living loved ones. Sometimes God (genderless energy Source) gives dying people more time to say goodbye to loved ones before passing away. Spirits say that it’s the memories that matter, not the final hours.

Every soul goes through the Life Review: a vision movie that shows our entire lives on Earth. It shows us who we helped, who we hurt and everything that happened from our birth to our death. It is a way to help us learn from our earth experience…we are our own judges, not God (genderless energy Source). Reflecting on our life, rather than being punished in Hell is the best and only way for us to learn. Then they perform tasks to help others and become like spirit guides. If the Life Review sounds scary like a final exam, remember you will be a soul with god-like powers, not constrained by human emotion. And if it’s true that we will still exist after death, then that means we can handle literally anything. Life Reviews gives souls closure and answers, allowing them to make amends and help other people along the way, thereby furthering their evolution. It’s more complex than Heaven and Hell, black and white, because souls are infinite energy, forever unique.

It gets me thinking…if reincarnation is true and we have lived and died hundreds of times in unique bodies…will we live more lives in the future or past? As human or animal or plant or alien?  Perhaps everything has a soul, even objects.

Where do our souls begin, and our human selves begin?

Chapter Twelve: “Loose Ends and Unfinished Business”

Everyone faces death differently. Some have it easier than others but hopefully we all will go the same peaceful place. According to Matt and spirits, everyone in the spirit world can understand each other and all illnesses and handicaps are removed. Many souls regret their final hours when they say things they don’t mean or when they commit suicide. Many times, souls will help people who also suffered from suicidal tendencies, addictions, depression, disabilities, and other challenges.

Chapter Thirteen: “Lights, Camera, Spirit!”

Matt describes his early experiences being on TV. Matt’s Grandmother Mary knew Matt would be a famous medium on E! TV and YouTube, and Matt’s dreams came true! There is no doubt that Mary is very proud of her grandson!

Chapter 14: “Ask The Medium”

In the last chapter, Matt answers various questions about psychics and the afterlife.
